From Mike Penning MP
February 2011
Leverstock Green FC
The Mayor,
Cllr Roger Taylor, and I both had a great time at the FA Vase match on 22nd
January – helped enormously, of course, by a 4 – 1 win! It is great to see such
a thriving, well organised and successful club. So, now down to the last
sixteen, I wish the team very best of luck for their draw against Rye United on
12th.
Quilts4London Campaign

One of
the delights of my job is meeting local people who do incredible things. I
met a group of these people the other week. A group of local quilters came
up with the idea of making a pennant to welcome every Olympic or Paralympic
athlete to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
This is
an excellent and inspirational project founded and led by local residents
Irene Heathcote and Catherine Hill. It is recognised as part of the Cultural
Olympiad and has achieved backing and support from across the UK.
|
I urge Dacorum residents to rise to the challenge. This is a
local initiative and deserved of local support. The world’s top athletes will be
descending on the UK in less than two years’ time and it would be great if each
one could receive a pennant by way of a personal welcome to London 2012.
We’ve
already had some good responses, for example the staff at Sainsbury’s, Apsley
Mills, are backing the project and also challenging their families and friends
to make a pennant – I urge other local companies, schools and organisations to
do the same.
Quilts4London will supply a ‘goody bag’ to get you started just contact them on

Untold Stories
|
I
signed a Book of Commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day at the end of January.
This is the tenth year of commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK.
The 27th January was chosen as it was the date of the liberation
of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Sadly,
antisemitism, racism and prejudice are still present in our society and this
year the Holocaust Memorial Trust has selected the theme ‘Untold Stories’.
The Trust is holding and taking part in commemorative events around the
country to tell the stories of those who survived the appalling events of
the Holocaust and to educate younger generations about the dangers of
allowing persecution and intolerance to take hold in society.
